In February, Governor Evers proposed his state budget. Read our reaction here and some of our analysis here (more to come soon!).

The Governor’s proposals now go to the Joint Committee on Finance (often called the Joint Finance Committee or JFC). This powerful committee is made up of both state Senators and Representatives. They’ll take the Governor’s proposed budget, negotiate back and forth on what to fund and by how much, vote on any changes they make, and send it to the full legislature for their vote. But first, they’re hosting 4 in-person hearings around the state where  everyone in Wisconsin can weigh  in on what they’d like to see prioritized in the state budget.

Who can attend?

Absolutely anyone in Wisconsin is welcome to attend! They are free and open to the public. You can either register to speak, or submit your comments in writing here. Or, you can just attend and listen or show support for others speaking. If you can’t attend you can listen live on Wisconsin Eye.

Why should I attend?

The state budget is our greatest opportunity this year to impact the policies in Wisconsin that either invest in our communities, or funnel the results of our hard work into the pockets of the wealthy few. To keep their grip on power, the wealthy few stoke division, using race and geography to pit Wisconsinites against each other. Rigging the rules leaves behind all but the wealthy few. The state budget is how we unrig the rules, and invest in things our communities need, like health care for everyone, well-resourced schools, and tax relief for working families.

Where are they?

There will be four hearings across the state throughout April:

*The Committee will conclude taking testimony at the time specified. Written comments can be emailed to the Committee at budget.comments@legis.wisconsin.gov or by using the “Submit Comment” button below. Written comments can also be sent via U.S. mail to: Joe Malkasian, Room 205 East, State Capitol, Madison, WI 53702.

If I go and decide to speak, what should I say?

You’ll have about 2-3 minutes to talk. Media will likely be there, as well as community leaders and decision makers. This is a great opportunity to share your truth and your experiences, and amplify your message to a captive larger audience.

You do not need to be a policy expert to share.

The most powerful testimony is usually one that comes from the heart. You could share:

  • Your name
  • Your role – are you a worker, parent, caregiver?
  • What challenges your community is facing. Stories are always the most powerful!
  • Use our budget analyses here to highlight solutions that will help your community.
