May Day reminds us that change has always come from collective action. Immigrants strengthen Wisconsin through their leadership, resilience, and commitment to building a future for the next generation.

Kids Forward stands in solidarity with immigrant workers and families. Our office will be closed on May 1 so that our team can join community members in honoring May Day, recognizing that our own families are part of Wisconsin’s immigrant story. Rooted in the long history of workers organizing for dignity, safety, and fair treatment, May Day continues to reflect the contributions of immigrant workers who sustain our farms, factories, small businesses, and communities.

Immigrants have long been part of Wisconsin’s story and are deeply woven into the fabric of our state.

Did you know?

Behind each of these numbers are families raising children, workers contributing their labor, and neighbors supporting one another.

Our Policy Priorities

As policy debates continue to shape the future of immigrant communities, decisions made at the state and federal level will determine whether families can live safely, access basic needs, and remain connected to their communities. This May Day, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing policies that strengthen and protect immigrant communities. We call for:

  1. Ending collaboration between local law enforcement and immigration enforcement including ending 287(g) programs and policies that entangle police with ICE
  2. Keeping ICE out of our communities, schools, and public spaces
  3. Expanding access to health care and food assistance so families can meet basic needs without fear
  4. Providing driver’s licenses for all ensuring safer roads and access to work, school, and health care
  5. Strengthening language access across public systems so families can access services
  6. Investing in policies that support worker safety, fair wages, and family stability

Immigrants Strengthen Wisconsin’s Communities, Workforce, and Future

With a pivotal election this fall, we’re excited to share throughout the year the data, stories, and insights that highlight the vital role immigrants play across Wisconsin. This work is rooted in the belief that public education matters. When conversations about immigration are grounded in facts and lived experiences, communities are better equipped to support policies that protect families. We invite community members, partners, and allies to learn, share, and stay engaged:

  • Take off work tomorrow, May 1, and attend an event near you. If you can’t attend, consider making a donation instead.
  • Like and share our social posts to spread the message about May Day on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • Read and share our toolkit to get more involved.

We applaud the legislators who put Wisconsin families over politics Last week the Governor’s problematic surplus deal was blocked in the Senate. This deal represents more than just a partisan disagreement about schools and taxes. At its core, this disagreement demands...
