Wisconsin was ranked 6th in the nation for 4-year-olds enrolled in prekindergarten programs in 2015, according to the annual The State of Preschool 2015, released by the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER). The report showed that 71.7% of Wisconsin’s 4-year-olds were enrolled in prekindergarten, including 4-year-old Kindergarten (63%), Head Start (7%), or special education (1%).

More Wisconsin details are available at the NIEER report on Wisconsin. Wisconsin was ranked 4th in nation in the increase in 4-year-olds in prekindergarten programs. Wisconsin’s enrollment rose by 30,860 from school year 2001-02 to 2014-15, a 45% increase.

This critical advancement towards a more developmentally appropriate juvenile justice system will reduce and repair harm, decrease racial disparities, increase child and family wellbeing, and increase opportunities for community-based alternatives to incarceration.
